Narrative:

While descending to 2500 ft MSL for a visual approach to lan; I went below the assigned altitude by approximately 300 ft. This caused a low altitude alert to sound for lansing approach. There is no excuse for my action; I simply was reading an approach plate when I looked up and noticed my altitude. Also I had not yet received a new lan altimeter setting which caused me to be a little lower than I thought.
