Narrative:
At approximately 500 ft on the ILS runway 22 into lga we encountered an area of very heavy rain; it seemed to form and intensify very quickly. By the time we realized it was there we were in it. The aircraft experienced a sudden loss of airspeed and began to sink below the GS. I initiated a windshear recovery; setting maximum thrust and pitching up. The aircraft initially responded slowly to the pitch and power change; then began a slow climb. Approximately 2-3 aircraft following us also went around. We were vectored to join a left downwind and after hearing several other aircraft land safely; we made a second approach and experienced smooth conditions. There were thunderstorms with tops in the 20's southwest of the airport. We had been vectored to downwind along the edge of them experiencing only some heavy rain and light turbulence.

Title: EMB145 FLT CREW EXPERIENCES WINDSHEAR DURING APCH TO LGA.
Narrative: AT APPROX 500 FT ON THE ILS RWY 22 INTO LGA WE ENCOUNTERED AN AREA OF VERY HVY RAIN; IT SEEMED TO FORM AND INTENSIFY VERY QUICKLY. BY THE TIME WE REALIZED IT WAS THERE WE WERE IN IT. THE ACFT EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF AIRSPD AND BEGAN TO SINK BELOW THE GS. I INITIATED A WINDSHEAR RECOVERY; SETTING MAX THRUST AND PITCHING UP. THE ACFT INITIALLY RESPONDED SLOWLY TO THE PITCH AND PWR CHANGE; THEN BEGAN A SLOW CLB. APPROX 2-3 ACFT FOLLOWING US ALSO WENT AROUND. WE WERE VECTORED TO JOIN A L DOWNWIND AND AFTER HEARING SEVERAL OTHER ACFT LAND SAFELY; WE MADE A SECOND APCH AND EXPERIENCED SMOOTH CONDITIONS. THERE WERE TSTMS WITH TOPS IN THE 20'S SW OF THE ARPT. WE HAD BEEN VECTORED TO DOWNWIND ALONG THE EDGE OF THEM EXPERIENCING ONLY SOME HVY RAIN AND LIGHT TURB.
