Narrative:
Idented the localizer to runway 36L and the morse code identify was correct. We then approached the final fix from our vector heading; yet the localizer indications seemed as though they were functioning as a back course. I asked the tower if the ILS was tuned correctly; and he stated he had 2 green lights; and I assumed that meant it was functioning correctly. We then were advised by the controller that we were 1/2 mi west of the localizer; and at that time I observed the runway and called it in sight. We then were cleared for the visual; and further on final; and centered on the PAPI as to course and slope; and the localizer and GS were centered on the ADI; yet did not capture. The guidance information was useless on our instruments; yet the proper frequency was selected on the center ILS and the first officer confirmed both the frequency selected and the correct morse code identify. I wrote this anomaly into the aircraft logbook; and await the findings from maintenance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B767-300 FLT CREW ON AN ILS APCH NOTICED THEIR CDI'S WERE NOT DISPLAYING ACCURATE INFO. TWR CONFIRMED ILS OPERATING NORMALLY.
Narrative: IDENTED THE LOC TO RWY 36L AND THE MORSE CODE IDENT WAS CORRECT. WE THEN APCHED THE FINAL FIX FROM OUR VECTOR HDG; YET THE LOC INDICATIONS SEEMED AS THOUGH THEY WERE FUNCTIONING AS A BACK COURSE. I ASKED THE TWR IF THE ILS WAS TUNED CORRECTLY; AND HE STATED HE HAD 2 GREEN LIGHTS; AND I ASSUMED THAT MEANT IT WAS FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY. WE THEN WERE ADVISED BY THE CTLR THAT WE WERE 1/2 MI W OF THE LOC; AND AT THAT TIME I OBSERVED THE RWY AND CALLED IT IN SIGHT. WE THEN WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL; AND FURTHER ON FINAL; AND CTRED ON THE PAPI AS TO COURSE AND SLOPE; AND THE LOC AND GS WERE CTRED ON THE ADI; YET DID NOT CAPTURE. THE GUIDANCE INFO WAS USELESS ON OUR INSTS; YET THE PROPER FREQ WAS SELECTED ON THE CTR ILS AND THE FO CONFIRMED BOTH THE FREQ SELECTED AND THE CORRECT MORSE CODE IDENT. I WROTE THIS ANOMALY INTO THE ACFT LOGBOOK; AND AWAIT THE FINDINGS FROM MAINT.
