Narrative:
During initial climb out at abq; and in a left turn to 310 degrees I asked captain if he wanted a VFR climb. He responded yes; and while abeam sandia peak began an immediate right turn to 060 degrees. I saw that we would clear the terrain; but told him that this is not a good idea; and immediately became concerned only if something were to go wrong at that point; either an engine coughing or something to draw our attention away from flying the aircraft. A moment passed while deciding what to do; based on captain's experience level; and it was too late. With the slats still extended; we received a terrain alert from the GPWS. I noticed he increased the rate of climb slightly; and the alert subsided. Supplemental information from acn 703017: departure said we could turn heading 060 degrees when able. I turned toward a gap that exists in the mountains and did not receive the turning performance I expected. First officer suggested I not turn. I did anyway. As I rolled out and continued to climb; a caution terrain warning occurred. I increased my rate of climb slightly and the warning stopped. Should have waited to turn east until higher.

Title: MD80 FLT CREW HAS A EGPWS TERRAIN WARNING DURING DEP FROM ABQ.
Narrative: DURING INITIAL CLBOUT AT ABQ; AND IN A L TURN TO 310 DEGS I ASKED CAPT IF HE WANTED A VFR CLB. HE RESPONDED YES; AND WHILE ABEAM SANDIA PEAK BEGAN AN IMMEDIATE R TURN TO 060 DEGS. I SAW THAT WE WOULD CLR THE TERRAIN; BUT TOLD HIM THAT THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA; AND IMMEDIATELY BECAME CONCERNED ONLY IF SOMETHING WERE TO GO WRONG AT THAT POINT; EITHER AN ENG COUGHING OR SOMETHING TO DRAW OUR ATTN AWAY FROM FLYING THE ACFT. A MOMENT PASSED WHILE DECIDING WHAT TO DO; BASED ON CAPT'S EXPERIENCE LEVEL; AND IT WAS TOO LATE. WITH THE SLATS STILL EXTENDED; WE RECEIVED A TERRAIN ALERT FROM THE GPWS.
