Narrative:
During climb out; I noticed my CDU display was distorted. I pointed it out to the captain. I checked the CDU box to see if it was hot and it was not. At about 14 to 16 mins into the flight; level at an intermediate climb out altitude of FL260; both the captain and myself noticed a strong electrical burning smell. That started to intensify. The captain put his O2 mask on and I got out of my seat and pulled the CDU circuit breakers on the overhead and then got in my seat and put on my O2 mask. The captain coordinating a turn back to the field. I started to fly the aircraft back to the field and the captain did the 'smoke/fume/odor' checklist. I declared an emergency and advised ATC to have emergency equipment meet the flight. The captain called the first flight attendant and advised him of the situation. I flew the aircraft to the intersection and transferred the controls to the captain and he made an uneventful overweight landing at 208;000 pounds. We turned off the runway and the fire trucks did an exterior inspection of the aircraft noting nothing. We taxied to the gate and parked.
