Narrative:
I was on an instrument flight plan from mtn to W29. I changed from ground control frequency and contacted mtn tower at the runway 33 hold short line and received a clearance to take off. As I advanced the aircraft; I heard another aircraft (C172) on short final to runway 33 state that they 'had an aircraft in motion and were going around.' I stopped immediately -- before actually entering the runway -- and the other aircraft executed a safe go around. Although I had received a takeoff clearance from an operating control tower; it is my responsibility to make sure there are no aircraft in proximity -- controllers make mistakes too! I did take a quick glance toward final before I crossed the hold short line; but saw nothing; probably because of the high wing. One potential problem (for which there is no good solution) is having separate ground and tower frequencys. I was on ground frequency when the C172 was cleared to land via the tower frequency; so I did not hear it. I think that I will monitor tower on communication #2 any time I am on a ground control frequency.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C182 PLT WAS CLRED INTO POS ON THE RWY FOR TKOF IN CONFLICT WITH A C172 ON SHORT FINAL.
Narrative: I WAS ON AN INST FLT PLAN FROM MTN TO W29. I CHANGED FROM GND CTL FREQ AND CONTACTED MTN TWR AT THE RWY 33 HOLD SHORT LINE AND RECEIVED A CLRNC TO TAKE OFF. AS I ADVANCED THE ACFT; I HEARD ANOTHER ACFT (C172) ON SHORT FINAL TO RWY 33 STATE THAT THEY 'HAD AN ACFT IN MOTION AND WERE GOING AROUND.' I STOPPED IMMEDIATELY -- BEFORE ACTUALLY ENTERING THE RWY -- AND THE OTHER ACFT EXECUTED A SAFE GAR. ALTHOUGH I HAD RECEIVED A TKOF CLRNC FROM AN OPERATING CTL TWR; IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO ACFT IN PROX -- CTLRS MAKE MISTAKES TOO! I DID TAKE A QUICK GLANCE TOWARD FINAL BEFORE I CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE; BUT SAW NOTHING; PROBABLY BECAUSE OF THE HIGH WING. ONE POTENTIAL PROB (FOR WHICH THERE IS NO GOOD SOLUTION) IS HAVING SEPARATE GND AND TWR FREQS. I WAS ON GND FREQ WHEN THE C172 WAS CLRED TO LAND VIA THE TWR FREQ; SO I DID NOT HEAR IT. I THINK THAT I WILL MONITOR TWR ON COM #2 ANY TIME I AM ON A GND CTL FREQ.
