Narrative:
During the external preflight of the aircraft; I observed the left landing gear door was open. The aircraft was scheduled for service and repair of a maintenance item. I believed maintenance had manually opened the door to service/inspect the area. As the aircraft was prepared for pushback; the hydraulic pumps were turned on and the checklist completed. A mechanic called on the interphone to inform of a metal component was caught in the seam of the left landing door. I depressurized the hydraulic system and the left door opened. A support strut had broken and prevented the door from engaging the uplock. There was no visible damage to the door area.
