Narrative:
Upon extending gear on final; received an unsafe gear indication on left medium large transport. Performed go around; accomplished QRH. After emergency extension lever was pulled; we received 3 safe indications; with gear door open light illuminated (normal indication). After stowing emergency gear extension lever; gear door open light extinguished; but left medium large transport indicated unsafe (not normal). We had captain on board as a non-rev; and he verified visually that the gear was down and locked. Declared an emergency to have arff standby just in case. On short final; left medium large transport then indicated safe. Landed uneventfully. Side note: emergency extension lever was extremely difficult to stow. Needed crash axe to stow it. We both know how to stow the handle; and guidance on how to stow the handle is in the QRH.
