Narrative:
While being vectored for landing dfw runway 18R. At approximately 4000 ft MSL after several vectoring turns while first officer was flying aircraft autoplt off. TA alert was sounded. We saw MD80 aircraft. We were slowed from approximately 200 KTS to 170 KTS. The MD80 was placed in front of us on approach to dfw. We made all turns in timely manner. I do not know how MD80 got so close. We were running the landing checklist at the time. I did not feel MD80 aircraft get too close to cause concern. Safety organization called me and left a message they had been contacted. I received no cause for alarm or concern from ATC. I filed a NASA report.
