Narrative:
While working the aft ceiling panel installation work card; I installed the aft ceiling horseshoe panel where the digital flight data recorder is installed. During the installation of the panel; I missed that the digital flight data recorder was not installed and closed all panels; signed all the paperwork for the installation not knowing the digital flight data recorder was not installed and turned the paperwork in for quality control to sign off. After reviewing the paperwork; I noticed that the panel installation along with the digital flight data recorder is all in one signoff and is about 6 long steps for the 1 signoff. I would have been more aware had this been a separate signoff. Discussed with management that it would be a good idea that the digital flight data recorder installation; removal and operations check have (separate) signoffs.

Title: A B737-700 DURING A HVY MAINT CHK AND AFT CABIN CEILING PANEL INSTALLATION THE DIGITAL FLT DATA RECORDER WAS NOT INSTALLED.
Narrative: WHILE WORKING THE AFT CEILING PANEL INSTALLATION WORK CARD; I INSTALLED THE AFT CEILING HORSESHOE PANEL WHERE THE DIGITAL FLT DATA RECORDER IS INSTALLED. DURING THE INSTALLATION OF THE PANEL; I MISSED THAT THE DIGITAL FLT DATA RECORDER WAS NOT INSTALLED AND CLOSED ALL PANELS; SIGNED ALL THE PAPERWORK FOR THE INSTALLATION NOT KNOWING THE DIGITAL FLT DATA RECORDER WAS NOT INSTALLED AND TURNED THE PAPERWORK IN FOR QUALITY CTL TO SIGN OFF. AFTER REVIEWING THE PAPERWORK; I NOTICED THAT THE PANEL INSTALLATION ALONG WITH THE DIGITAL FLT DATA RECORDER IS ALL IN ONE SIGNOFF AND IS ABOUT 6 LONG STEPS FOR THE 1 SIGNOFF. I WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE AWARE HAD THIS BEEN A SEPARATE SIGNOFF. DISCUSSED WITH MGMNT THAT IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA THAT THE DIGITAL FLT DATA RECORDER INSTALLATION; REMOVAL AND OPS CHK HAVE (SEPARATE) SIGNOFFS.
