Narrative:
First officer began takeoff roll and almost immediately the aircraft veered to the right. Left rudder seemed sluggish at best. Takeoff was aborted and I taxied off using tiller. #2 seemed to spool slowly so we performed an engine run-up. #2 spooled a little slow -- thought the combination of a slow #2 spool and a gust may have been the problem. Taxied back to runway; and this time I made the takeoff. Set brakes and let engines stabilize for a little extra time. All seemed normal so released the brakes and started the roll. Again the aircraft veered to the right; and with full left rudder; it would not come back to centerline. Grabbed the tiller and once again taxied off. Called maintenance and he had us perform some taxi tests with rudder pedals and then tiller. Eventually had us slowly taxi back to the gate using tiller.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-300 VEERS R ON BOTH FIRST AND SECOND TKOF ATTEMPTS.
Narrative: FO BEGAN TKOF ROLL AND ALMOST IMMEDIATELY THE ACFT VEERED TO THE R. L RUDDER SEEMED SLUGGISH AT BEST. TKOF WAS ABORTED AND I TAXIED OFF USING TILLER. #2 SEEMED TO SPOOL SLOWLY SO WE PERFORMED AN ENG RUN-UP. #2 SPOOLED A LITTLE SLOW -- THOUGHT THE COMBINATION OF A SLOW #2 SPOOL AND A GUST MAY HAVE BEEN THE PROB. TAXIED BACK TO RWY; AND THIS TIME I MADE THE TKOF. SET BRAKES AND LET ENGS STABILIZE FOR A LITTLE EXTRA TIME. ALL SEEMED NORMAL SO RELEASED THE BRAKES AND STARTED THE ROLL. AGAIN THE ACFT VEERED TO THE R; AND WITH FULL L RUDDER; IT WOULD NOT COME BACK TO CTRLINE. GRABBED THE TILLER AND ONCE AGAIN TAXIED OFF. CALLED MAINT AND HE HAD US PERFORM SOME TAXI TESTS WITH RUDDER PEDALS AND THEN TILLER. EVENTUALLY HAD US SLOWLY TAXI BACK TO THE GATE USING TILLER.
