Narrative:

We were proceeding VFR from ZZZ to fdk and P40 was expanded and we were using GPS; VOR and visual navigation to remain clear. As we approached fdk from the northeast; I looked down and saw a large helicopter perhaps 500 ft below us. I was the PNF; but was nonetheless looking for traffic. The helicopter seemed to come out of nowhere. We orbited over fdk to pick up an ADIZ clearance to gai. The controller first asked us to squawk identify on 1200 and after about a min gave us our ADIZ squawk. No mention was made of any separation and airspace violation and we proceeded normally to gai. No evasive action was necessary and to the best of our knowledge; and supported by GPS; VOR and visual landmarks. We remained clear of restr or prohibited airspace. Nonetheless; coming close to a helicopter is very disconcerting. I will look more carefully for traffic in the future.

Title: A C177 NEAR FDK CAME WITHIN 500 FT OF A HELI. THE RPTR WAS NOT NEAR P40 ACCORDING TO HIS NAV EQUIP.

Narrative: WE WERE PROCEEDING VFR FROM ZZZ TO FDK AND P40 WAS EXPANDED AND WE WERE USING GPS; VOR AND VISUAL NAV TO REMAIN CLR. AS WE APCHED FDK FROM THE NE; I LOOKED DOWN AND SAW A LARGE HELI PERHAPS 500 FT BELOW US. I WAS THE PNF; BUT WAS NONETHELESS LOOKING FOR TFC. THE HELI SEEMED TO COME OUT OF NOWHERE. WE ORBITED OVER FDK TO PICK UP AN ADIZ CLRNC TO GAI. THE CTLR FIRST ASKED US TO SQUAWK IDENT ON 1200 AND AFTER ABOUT A MIN GAVE US OUR ADIZ SQUAWK. WE REMAINED CLR OF RESTR OR PROHIBITED AIRSPACE. NONETHELESS; COMING CLOSE TO A HELI IS VERY DISCONCERTING. I WILL LOOK MORE CAREFULLY FOR TFC IN THE FUTURE.
