Narrative:
The reason for this report -- the moving map depicted the airport over 1 mile south of where I landed. I returned to 8f5 and with the GNS-430 showing me over the airport I was over a major transmission line. Proceeded north and landed 8f5. Taxied to north end of strip; GPS indicated 33 degrees 09.13 094 42.01 and gave me distance and bearing to 8f5 of 1.52 miles 174 degree heading. Taxied to south end of strip; GPS 33 degrees 08.64 094 degrees 42.01 1.03 miles and 173 degrees to 8f5. If I had been IMC I would have crashed into trees and power lines. This is the only location I have observed the GPS to be wrong. I believe the database is wrong. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: he has been aware for some time that 8f5 is not where it's supposed to be; but recently had reason to use the airport under adverse conditions. When positioned over the airport according to the GPS the reporter indicated he was directly over a major transmission line about a mile south; adding this should be checked and if confirmed; corrected.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT RPTS THE PUBLISHED POSITION OF THE MORRIS COUNTY ARPT; 8F5; DOES NOT COINCIDE WITH THE ACTUAL POSITION.
Narrative: THE REASON FOR THIS RPT -- THE MOVING MAP DEPICTED THE ARPT OVER 1 MILE S OF WHERE I LANDED. I RETURNED TO 8F5 AND WITH THE GNS-430 SHOWING ME OVER THE ARPT I WAS OVER A MAJOR TRANSMISSION LINE. PROCEEDED N AND LANDED 8F5. TAXIED TO N END OF STRIP; GPS INDICATED 33 DEGS 09.13 094 42.01 AND GAVE ME DISTANCE AND BEARING TO 8F5 OF 1.52 MILES 174 DEG HDG. TAXIED TO S END OF STRIP; GPS 33 DEGS 08.64 094 DEGS 42.01 1.03 MILES AND 173 DEGS TO 8F5. IF I HAD BEEN IMC I WOULD HAVE CRASHED INTO TREES AND POWER LINES. THIS IS THE ONLY LOCATION I HAVE OBSERVED THE GPS TO BE WRONG. I BELIEVE THE DATABASE IS WRONG. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: HE HAS BEEN AWARE FOR SOME TIME THAT 8F5 IS NOT WHERE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE; BUT RECENTLY HAD REASON TO USE THE ARPT UNDER ADVERSE CONDITIONS. WHEN POSITIONED OVER THE ARPT ACCORDING TO THE GPS THE RPTR INDICATED HE WAS DIRECTLY OVER A MAJOR TRANSMISSION LINE ABOUT A MILE S; ADDING THIS SHOULD BE CHKED AND IF CONFIRMED; CORRECTED.
