Narrative:
On sep/tue/06; I was asked to come help a fellow technician with aircraft X. There was a missing fastener on left engine outboard pylon that they wanted me to replace; for which I was given screws; washers; and nuts; while they worked a similar problem on the right engine pylon. I replaced screw and the nut plate was missing. I substituted a washer and nut for nut plate since nut plate could not be replaced without removing a large panel. This is generally permitted within srm fastener substitution section and fastener substitution engineering change/repair authority/authorized. I was not told that aircraft was being repaired from engineering change repair authority/authorized that prohibited fastener substitution. I was also not involved in signoff of logbook.
