Narrative:
While on localizer runway 35L tower gave us a low altitude alert while passing through 1100 ft MSL. Did not know why. Hit 4.5 DME at 1320 ft MSL and MDA is 860 ft MSL. Arrested rate of descent to 300 FPM; leveled off at 1000 ft MSL and broke out and landed.
