Narrative:

Aircraft X taxied to runway 22 for departure called ready to depart while still taxiing and after the landing traffic had cleared the runway; aircraft X was cleared for takeoff with a 270 degree heading assigned. Aircraft X turned onto runway 26 instead and I advised him that he was on the wrong runway and to continue to runway 22 for departure. 2 controllers were on duty and the radar function was in the TRACON. I was in the tower performing only tower functions with no radar/admin duties. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated the subject incident occurred on his last work day and the reporter did not advise management because he did not feel at the time that it was a significant incident. During his days off he became concerned about the possible implications of the incident; considering the recent tragedy at lex; and informed management upon his return to work. The reporter indicated that a statement was provided for FAA management as well as for the NTSB.

Title: LEX LCL CTLR DESCRIBED INCIDENT AS ACFT TAXIED TO RWY 22 FOR DEP ATTEMPTED TO DEPART RWY 26.

Narrative: ACFT X TAXIED TO RWY 22 FOR DEP CALLED READY TO DEPART WHILE STILL TAXIING AND AFTER THE LNDG TFC HAD CLRED THE RWY; ACFT X WAS CLRED FOR TKOF WITH A 270 DEG HDG ASSIGNED. ACFT X TURNED ONTO RWY 26 INSTEAD AND I ADVISED HIM THAT HE WAS ON THE WRONG RWY AND TO CONTINUE TO RWY 22 FOR DEP. 2 CTLRS WERE ON DUTY AND THE RADAR FUNCTION WAS IN THE TRACON. I WAS IN THE TWR PERFORMING ONLY TWR FUNCTIONS WITH NO RADAR/ADMIN DUTIES. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THE SUBJECT INCIDENT OCCURRED ON HIS LAST WORK DAY AND THE REPORTER DID NOT ADVISE MANAGEMENT BECAUSE HE DID NOT FEEL AT THE TIME THAT IT WAS A SIGNIFICANT INCIDENT. DURING HIS DAYS OFF HE BECAME CONCERNED ABOUT THE POSSIBLE IMPLICATIONS OF THE INCIDENT; CONSIDERING THE RECENT TRAGEDY AT LEX; AND INFORMED MANAGEMENT UPON HIS RETURN TO WORK. THE REPORTER INDICATED THAT A STATEMENT WAS PROVIDED FOR FAA MANAGEMENT AS WELL AS FOR THE NTSB.
