Narrative:
We crossed kanni intersection; FL310; talking with moncton center. We began to experience light to moderate turbulence and decided to reduce airspeed to mach .79. We were IMC with nothing showing on radar. Smooth flight up until this point. Just east of kanni; the turbulence became severe and ascended us rapidly through FL315. (There was a brief period of moderate rain/ice.) the autoplt disconnected and the PF took manual control of airplane reducing thrust and arresting the ascent at approximately FL319. We started descent back to FL310 when moncton center asked us to verify altitude. We reported severe turbulence and the abrupt updraft. Leveling at FL310 now encountering light turbulence we requested climb to FL350. We did not encounter any more moderate or severe turbulence and at no time did we paint anything on radar.

Title: B767 FLT CREW ENCOUNTERS MODERATE TO SEVERE TURB DURING CLB.
Narrative: WE CROSSED KANNI INTXN; FL310; TALKING WITH MONCTON CTR. WE BEGAN TO EXPERIENCE LIGHT TO MODERATE TURB AND DECIDED TO REDUCE AIRSPD TO MACH .79. WE WERE IMC WITH NOTHING SHOWING ON RADAR. SMOOTH FLT UP UNTIL THIS POINT. JUST E OF KANNI; THE TURB BECAME SEVERE AND ASCENDED US RAPIDLY THROUGH FL315. (THERE WAS A BRIEF PERIOD OF MODERATE RAIN/ICE.) THE AUTOPLT DISCONNECTED AND THE PF TOOK MANUAL CTL OF AIRPLANE REDUCING THRUST AND ARRESTING THE ASCENT AT APPROX FL319. WE STARTED DSCNT BACK TO FL310 WHEN MONCTON CTR ASKED US TO VERIFY ALT. WE RPTED SEVERE TURB AND THE ABRUPT UPDRAFT. LEVELING AT FL310 NOW ENCOUNTERING LIGHT TURB WE REQUESTED CLB TO FL350. WE DID NOT ENCOUNTER ANY MORE MODERATE OR SEVERE TURB AND AT NO TIME DID WE PAINT ANYTHING ON RADAR.
