Narrative:

This was a readback/hearback error. Normally climbing out of clt; ZTL will clear us to 'climb to FL230; normal speed.' we believed we were given this clearance; read it back; and performed our altitude awareness procedure (set; point; verbalize). We climbed to FL230. After being switched to ZJX; we were questioned about our altitude. The controller thought we should be at FL220. We descended to FL220 per his clearance. As far as we know there was no traffic conflict.
