Narrative:
Received IFR clearance from ground controller; taxied to runway hold short line for what we thought was runway 30. Switched to tower; asked for takeoff clearance; told to hold short; return to ground controller for amended clearance. Contacted ground control and received amended clearance. Returned to tower; asked for takeoff clearance; told to position and hold runway 30. Acknowledged hold in position on runway 30. After a moment; tower cleared us for takeoff. After departure; tower informed us that we departed on runway 34; not runway 30. Examining the taxi diagram; it is confusing because the tower runways intersect at the hold short line. In fact runway 34 hold short is before runway 30 and you must cross runway 34 to get to runway 30. Tower controller did not say we were on the wrong runway while in position and hold. He shares responsibility for this incident. I am responsible as PIC to assure alignment with the proper runway. The confusion over the ground controller giving me the incorrect clearance initially also contributed to the incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C172 PLT AT SUA DEPARTS ON RWY 34 WHEN TKOF CLRNC WAS FOR RWY 30. PLT CITES CLRNC CHANGE; PLT; AND CTLR INATTN AS FACTORS.
Narrative: RECEIVED IFR CLRNC FROM GND CTLR; TAXIED TO RWY HOLD SHORT LINE FOR WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS RWY 30. SWITCHED TO TWR; ASKED FOR TKOF CLRNC; TOLD TO HOLD SHORT; RETURN TO GND CTLR FOR AMENDED CLRNC. CONTACTED GND CTL AND RECEIVED AMENDED CLRNC. RETURNED TO TWR; ASKED FOR TKOF CLRNC; TOLD TO POS AND HOLD RWY 30. ACKNOWLEDGED HOLD IN POS ON RWY 30. AFTER A MOMENT; TWR CLRED US FOR TKOF. AFTER DEP; TWR INFORMED US THAT WE DEPARTED ON RWY 34; NOT RWY 30. EXAMINING THE TAXI DIAGRAM; IT IS CONFUSING BECAUSE THE TWR RWYS INTERSECT AT THE HOLD SHORT LINE. IN FACT RWY 34 HOLD SHORT IS BEFORE RWY 30 AND YOU MUST CROSS RWY 34 TO GET TO RWY 30. TWR CTLR DID NOT SAY WE WERE ON THE WRONG RWY WHILE IN POS AND HOLD. HE SHARES RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS INCIDENT. I AM RESPONSIBLE AS PIC TO ASSURE ALIGNMENT WITH THE PROPER RWY. THE CONFUSION OVER THE GND CTLR GIVING ME THE INCORRECT CLRNC INITIALLY ALSO CONTRIBUTED TO THE INCIDENT.
