Narrative:

While doing an IRS navigation check the first officer accidentally updated our current position to an incorrect latitude/longitude. This happened at '30 west.' it took about 10 mins to reset the IRS position to the GNS position and we were about 14 mi from our course. We corrected back to course with no further incident. The incident was caused by the first officer's lack of knowledge of the FMC and IRS system and by myself not paying attention to what he was doing. From now on when I fly with a crew member that I haven't flown with before; I will monitor all duties and procedures to ensure that they know what they are doing. This crew member has been on the aircraft for 2 yrs and told me he was very close to upgrade to captain; so I assumed that he was experienced in international procedures.

FROM NOW ON WHEN I FLY WITH A CREW MEMBER THAT I HAVEN'T FLOWN WITH BEFORE; I WILL MONITOR ALL DUTIES AND PROCS TO ENSURE THAT THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. THIS CREW MEMBER HAS BEEN ON THE ACFT FOR 2 YRS AND TOLD ME HE WAS VERY CLOSE TO UPGRADE TO CAPT; SO I ASSUMED THAT HE WAS EXPERIENCED IN INTL PROCS.
