Narrative:
It was an early morning departure to pick up human organs at ZZZ. In a rush to get airborne; I overlooked the correct altimeter setting. The correct altimeter setting was 30.73 inches. The previous crew brought the aircraft in when the altimeter setting was 29.71 inches. In my pre-dawn haste; I simply adjusted the altimeter up .02 inches thinking I had set 30.73 inches. The altimeter was set at 29.73 inches. Leveling at 15000 ft; ZZZ center controller asked me to verify altitude. I replied 'level 15000 ft; confirm 29.73 inches.' he replied with 30.73 inches and indicated my altitude was 15800 ft. I immediately reset altimeter and leveled at 15000 ft. There was no further mention of the deviation. This event was influenced by my very early and short notice departure. It was also a single pilot trip. We are authority/authorized single pilot PIC; but fly 2 pilot crews on most of our flts. I simply allowed myself to be rushed and have the mistake to prove it. This event goes against the very grain of a basic verification of flight instruments prior to departure. In the future; I will not allow myself to be rushed. It is a great example of how getting away from the basics causes bigger problems in the short term. I will also remember that no one can rush you; but yourself!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A BE100 PLT FAILED TO SET THE CORRECT ALTIMETER SETTING PRIOR TO A PREDAWN TKOF BECAUSE HE WAS RUSHED. HIS ALTIMETER ERROR WAS 800 FT AT ALT.
Narrative: IT WAS AN EARLY MORNING DEP TO PICK UP HUMAN ORGANS AT ZZZ. IN A RUSH TO GET AIRBORNE; I OVERLOOKED THE CORRECT ALTIMETER SETTING. THE CORRECT ALTIMETER SETTING WAS 30.73 INCHES. THE PREVIOUS CREW BROUGHT THE ACFT IN WHEN THE ALTIMETER SETTING WAS 29.71 INCHES. IN MY PRE-DAWN HASTE; I SIMPLY ADJUSTED THE ALTIMETER UP .02 INCHES THINKING I HAD SET 30.73 INCHES. THE ALTIMETER WAS SET AT 29.73 INCHES. LEVELING AT 15000 FT; ZZZ CTR CTLR ASKED ME TO VERIFY ALT. I REPLIED 'LEVEL 15000 FT; CONFIRM 29.73 INCHES.' HE REPLIED WITH 30.73 INCHES AND INDICATED MY ALT WAS 15800 FT. I IMMEDIATELY RESET ALTIMETER AND LEVELED AT 15000 FT. THERE WAS NO FURTHER MENTION OF THE DEV. THIS EVENT WAS INFLUENCED BY MY VERY EARLY AND SHORT NOTICE DEP. IT WAS ALSO A SINGLE PLT TRIP. WE ARE AUTH SINGLE PLT PIC; BUT FLY 2 PLT CREWS ON MOST OF OUR FLTS. I SIMPLY ALLOWED MYSELF TO BE RUSHED AND HAVE THE MISTAKE TO PROVE IT. THIS EVENT GOES AGAINST THE VERY GRAIN OF A BASIC VERIFICATION OF FLT INSTS PRIOR TO DEP. IN THE FUTURE; I WILL NOT ALLOW MYSELF TO BE RUSHED. IT IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF HOW GETTING AWAY FROM THE BASICS CAUSES BIGGER PROBS IN THE SHORT TERM. I WILL ALSO REMEMBER THAT NO ONE CAN RUSH YOU; BUT YOURSELF!
