Narrative:
While being radar vectored to runway 11 level at 4000 ft; we received a terrain; terrain alert. We executed the terrain avoidance maneuver and climbed from 4000 ft to about 5700 ft. We called ATC at the beginning of the event and the controller told us the MVA was 4000 ft for our sector.

Title: B737 CREW RECEIVES GPWS TERRAIN WARNING WHILE BEING VECTORED FOR ILS RWY 11 AT OAK.
Narrative: WHILE BEING RADAR VECTORED TO RWY 11 LEVEL AT 4000 FT; WE RECEIVED A TERRAIN; TERRAIN ALERT. WE EXECUTED THE TERRAIN AVOIDANCE MANEUVER AND CLBED FROM 4000 FT TO ABOUT 5700 FT. WE CALLED ATC AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EVENT AND THE CTLR TOLD US THE MVA WAS 4000 FT FOR OUR SECTOR.
