Narrative:
Aircraft #1 did not automatically handoff to ZTL; so I initiated a handoff which failed. The d-side called to make a manual handoff and in the meantime I descended aircraft #2 from FL380-FL340. I simply overlooked (missed) that they were traffic for each other. When conflict alert went off they were already past each other and situation was not correctable.
