Narrative:
I troubleshot the left pack automatic-temperature control system; but was unable to repair in a timely manner; so I elected to MEL the system. I contacted maintenance control. The controller had a hard time with the computer and it took a long time to get the numbers. I was given an MEL of 21-19 and it should have been a 21-21. The maintenance controllers do a good job; however it would be to the mechanics' and the maintenance controllers' advantage if the mechanic had a hard copy of the MEL to refer to. I realize we work in a computer world; however the mechanic's process at the gate has not changed in 30 yrs. We don't have the convenience at the gate to double-check each other. We need hard copies to carry to the gates. It would be beneficial also for special procedures on certain MEL's. We need hard copies.
