Narrative:
After takeoff on runway 25R; engaged LNAV at approximately 400 ft AGL. Aircraft made 'large' turn to the right (north) for first fix 'hiipr' on the karvr departure. Departure on check-in said; 'make immediate left turn to heading 220 degrees.' heading was approximately 265 degrees at that time. Everything was set up correctly -- runway 25R in FMC; karvr 1 set in and verified first fix with lax ground as hiipr. The only thing noted at takeoff checklist at 'map display' the aircraft alignment was just at the south side of runway 25R. Don't know at 400 ft when LNAV engaged if aircraft was going to magenta line or 'X' at 620 ft or hiipr; but it was a large turn. No TA/RA on TCAS. No traffic conflict from the north side. ATC said they have had other aircraft do same and they will write it up and suggested we do the same. Looking back; we should have done alignment on runway 25R and when aircraft made turn north should have just kept runway heading. From takeoff heading after 'X' it is a 30 degree turn and we had 15 degrees to the right; so now it was about 45 degree turn from 'X' to hiipr.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 FLT CREW HAS TRACK HDG DEV DURING KARVR 1 DEP FROM LAX.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF ON RWY 25R; ENGAGED LNAV AT APPROX 400 FT AGL. ACFT MADE 'LARGE' TURN TO THE R (N) FOR FIRST FIX 'HIIPR' ON THE KARVR DEP. DEP ON CHK-IN SAID; 'MAKE IMMEDIATE L TURN TO HDG 220 DEGS.' HDG WAS APPROX 265 DEGS AT THAT TIME. EVERYTHING WAS SET UP CORRECTLY -- RWY 25R IN FMC; KARVR 1 SET IN AND VERIFIED FIRST FIX WITH LAX GND AS HIIPR. THE ONLY THING NOTED AT TKOF CHKLIST AT 'MAP DISPLAY' THE ACFT ALIGNMENT WAS JUST AT THE S SIDE OF RWY 25R. DON'T KNOW AT 400 FT WHEN LNAV ENGAGED IF ACFT WAS GOING TO MAGENTA LINE OR 'X' AT 620 FT OR HIIPR; BUT IT WAS A LARGE TURN. NO TA/RA ON TCAS. NO TFC CONFLICT FROM THE N SIDE. ATC SAID THEY HAVE HAD OTHER ACFT DO SAME AND THEY WILL WRITE IT UP AND SUGGESTED WE DO THE SAME. LOOKING BACK; WE SHOULD HAVE DONE ALIGNMENT ON RWY 25R AND WHEN ACFT MADE TURN N SHOULD HAVE JUST KEPT RWY HDG. FROM TKOF HDG AFTER 'X' IT IS A 30 DEG TURN AND WE HAD 15 DEGS TO THE R; SO NOW IT WAS ABOUT 45 DEG TURN FROM 'X' TO HIIPR.
