Narrative:
First officer was returning from 3 1/2 yr furlough. I was also having things happen to me on approach that hadn't happened before. It was a rapid sequence of events that kept me chasing one thing after another. It took the aural warning to draw immediate attention to the real problem. On approach first officer called for gear down; flaps 15 degrees; landing checklist. While going through flows and starting list; first officer deselected autothrottles. He then could not figure out why he couldn't get throttles back and slow below 150 KTS. When I started to bug him down; I couldn't. He had then hit the go around button in an attempt to disengage the autothrottles. While trying to help him get his flight director back; he got the autothrottles disengaged. By then we were approaching 500 ft and I started my callouts. About then; the confign warning said too low -- flaps. Flaps were immediately brought to 30 degrees; checklist completed; and uneventful landing made. The speed was already close to landing speed and the flaps took only a couple of seconds to go from 15 degrees to 30 degrees. Aural warning and flight crew observation. Flaps placed to proper position for a normal landing. Extra vigilance with recalled crew members.

Title: B737 CREW GETS BEHIND THE ACFT DURING THE APPROACH AND FORGETS TO SELECT FLAPS TO 30 UNTIL REMINDED BY THE GPWS AT 500 FEET.
Narrative: FO WAS RETURNING FROM 3 1/2 YR FURLOUGH. I WAS ALSO HAVING THINGS HAPPEN TO ME ON APCH THAT HADN'T HAPPENED BEFORE. IT WAS A RAPID SEQUENCE OF EVENTS THAT KEPT ME CHASING ONE THING AFTER ANOTHER. IT TOOK THE AURAL WARNING TO DRAW IMMEDIATE ATTN TO THE REAL PROB. ON APCH FO CALLED FOR GEAR DOWN; FLAPS 15 DEGS; LNDG CHKLIST. WHILE GOING THROUGH FLOWS AND STARTING LIST; FO DESELECTED AUTOTHROTTLES. HE THEN COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHY HE COULDN'T GET THROTTLES BACK AND SLOW BELOW 150 KTS. WHEN I STARTED TO BUG HIM DOWN; I COULDN'T. HE HAD THEN HIT THE GAR BUTTON IN AN ATTEMPT TO DISENGAGE THE AUTOTHROTTLES. WHILE TRYING TO HELP HIM GET HIS FLT DIRECTOR BACK; HE GOT THE AUTOTHROTTLES DISENGAGED. BY THEN WE WERE APCHING 500 FT AND I STARTED MY CALLOUTS. ABOUT THEN; THE CONFIGN WARNING SAID TOO LOW -- FLAPS. FLAPS WERE IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT TO 30 DEGS; CHKLIST COMPLETED; AND UNEVENTFUL LNDG MADE. THE SPD WAS ALREADY CLOSE TO LNDG SPD AND THE FLAPS TOOK ONLY A COUPLE OF SECONDS TO GO FROM 15 DEGS TO 30 DEGS. AURAL WARNING AND FLT CREW OBSERVATION. FLAPS PLACED TO PROPER POS FOR A NORMAL LNDG. EXTRA VIGILANCE WITH RECALLED CREW MEMBERS.
