Narrative:
The maintenance note in the cdl (confign deviation list) was not complied with due to myself forgetting about it under multiple aircraft swaps that placed this aircraft out of town on the day of discovery and the next 2 flight days. Forward left and right position light lens covers were placed on cdl for cracks. The cdl maintenance note states in 2 flight days the amm must be complied with for the cracked lens. It flew 1 flight day over the limit due to no other direction to lock in tracking the 2 flight day limit other than memory. Cdl that is applied for this item is a 120 day limit. If restr to 2 flight days; it should not be a cdl. Rather it should be an MEL CAT 'a' so the 2 day flight limit is right up front and tracked automatically. In ZZZ when maintenance was attempting to address and clear the cdl; the maintenance controller on duty noticed the note in the cdl while reviewing it along with looking for parts to correct the problem. 'Rework' means that we took both forward position light lens covers off and continued the aircraft in service in that condition per the cdl with performance penalties. (Repairing lens covers for installation at a later date.) the maintenance note for the 2 flight day restr in the cdl for 'cracked' lens should be a note to place on an MEL CAT 'a' so that the tracking is up front for all to see; rather than a note at the second page of a cdl; for a 2 flight day limit that has a 120 day time limit on the main cdl.

Title: A B717 ACFT LEFT AND RIGHT WING FWD POSITION (NAVIGATION) LIGHT LENS COVERS REMOVED FOR CRACKS. THE TWO FLT DAY LIMIT WAS EXCEEDED FOR REPAIR.
Narrative: THE MAINT NOTE IN THE CDL (CONFIGN DEV LIST) WAS NOT COMPLIED WITH DUE TO MYSELF FORGETTING ABOUT IT UNDER MULTIPLE ACFT SWAPS THAT PLACED THIS ACFT OUT OF TOWN ON THE DAY OF DISCOVERY AND THE NEXT 2 FLT DAYS. FORWARD L AND R POS LIGHT LENS COVERS WERE PLACED ON CDL FOR CRACKS. THE CDL MAINT NOTE STATES IN 2 FLT DAYS THE AMM MUST BE COMPLIED WITH FOR THE CRACKED LENS. IT FLEW 1 FLT DAY OVER THE LIMIT DUE TO NO OTHER DIRECTION TO LOCK IN TRACKING THE 2 FLT DAY LIMIT OTHER THAN MEMORY. CDL THAT IS APPLIED FOR THIS ITEM IS A 120 DAY LIMIT. IF RESTR TO 2 FLT DAYS; IT SHOULD NOT BE A CDL. RATHER IT SHOULD BE AN MEL CAT 'A' SO THE 2 DAY FLT LIMIT IS RIGHT UP FRONT AND TRACKED AUTOMATICALLY. IN ZZZ WHEN MAINT WAS ATTEMPTING TO ADDRESS AND CLR THE CDL; THE MAINT CTLR ON DUTY NOTICED THE NOTE IN THE CDL WHILE REVIEWING IT ALONG WITH LOOKING FOR PARTS TO CORRECT THE PROB. 'REWORK' MEANS THAT WE TOOK BOTH FORWARD POS LIGHT LENS COVERS OFF AND CONTINUED THE ACFT IN SVC IN THAT CONDITION PER THE CDL WITH PERFORMANCE PENALTIES. (REPAIRING LENS COVERS FOR INSTALLATION AT A LATER DATE.) THE MAINT NOTE FOR THE 2 FLT DAY RESTR IN THE CDL FOR 'CRACKED' LENS SHOULD BE A NOTE TO PLACE ON AN MEL CAT 'A' SO THAT THE TRACKING IS UP FRONT FOR ALL TO SEE; RATHER THAN A NOTE AT THE SECOND PAGE OF A CDL; FOR A 2 FLT DAY LIMIT THAT HAS A 120 DAY TIME LIMIT ON THE MAIN CDL.
