Narrative:

On approach to landing at ZZZ; airplane engine began sputtering approximately 6 mi from landing runway. I was on frequency with the control tower and told them I was having engine trouble. They cleared me to land and I immediately began emergency procedures (glide speed; instrument check). After gliding without power for 2 mi; I realized I would not make the runway and found a non-traffic road to land. I landed the airplane safely on the road with no injury or property damage. I communicated with the tower the entire time and told them I had landed safely and approximately where I was. After that; I moved the airplane off the road and to a safe place and then the rescue team arrived.
