Primary Problem | Flight Crew Human Performance |
Narrative:
On level off; ATC advised; as we checked on frequency; that we showed higher than assigned altitude. Altimeters and transponder were reset. Flight resumed cruise at FL380. Problem caused by several factors (ie climbing through moderate turbulence at transition altitude; icing conditions in climb; other distractions) which seem to have all occurred at the same time. Center notified us of deviation as we were checking on and leveling at FL380. Captain (PF) returned aircraft to proper level and flight continued on without further incident. Problem seems to have occurred due to distractions at transition altitude affecting both crew members.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 CREW FORGETS TO RESET ALTIMETERS TO 29.92 PASSING 18000 FT AND EXCEEDS ASSIGNED ALT ON LEVEL OFF.
Narrative: ON LEVEL OFF; ATC ADVISED; AS WE CHKED ON FREQ; THAT WE SHOWED HIGHER THAN ASSIGNED ALT. ALTIMETERS AND XPONDER WERE RESET. FLT RESUMED CRUISE AT FL380. PROB CAUSED BY SEVERAL FACTORS (IE CLBING THROUGH MODERATE TURB AT TRANSITION ALT; ICING CONDITIONS IN CLB; OTHER DISTRACTIONS) WHICH SEEM TO HAVE ALL OCCURRED AT THE SAME TIME. CTR NOTIFIED US OF DEVIATION AS WE WERE CHKING ON AND LEVELING AT FL380. CAPT (PF) RETURNED ACFT TO PROPER LEVEL AND FLT CONTINUED ON WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. PROB SEEMS TO HAVE OCCURRED DUE TO DISTRACTIONS AT TRANSITION ALT AFFECTING BOTH CREW MEMBERS.
