Narrative:

Original flight plan ZZZ1 to ZZZ2 19 NM fuel required 4 gallons; reserve 4 gallons for day; or 6 gallons for night. Total 10 gallons. Left with 16 gallons. VFR severe clear wind northeast 7-10 KTS. ATIS checked. Departed VFR; acquired ATIS and entered hold. Left hold for ZZZ3 after calculated time expired. Obtained ASOS at ZZZ3. Set up to gain pattern from west to land. Turned base for runway 4. Engine faltered; engine and electric fuel pump on. If engine quit; I would not make runway. Aborted airport landing and landed in large grass field. Taxied to airport via road with escort.
