Narrative:
On this tuesday morning in question; I departed VFR on an IFR flight plan and was obtaining my clearance to agc. During the process of the climb; I was distraction and failed to properly lean the engine for the attained altitude. I encountered subsequent engine trouble; contacted ZTL and informed them of the engine problem and made a 180 degree turn to return to 9a9. Center replied that they acknowledged my turn and when I had the field in sight and 'made' I requested them to cancel my flight plan. After examination of the engine and discussion with an a&P; the problem was determined and I proceeded under VFR to agc without incident.
