Narrative:
While looking over the POM7 SID during preflight; I noticed that there was a crossing restr at pom of 7000 ft maximum. I twisted in 7000 ft in the altitude alerter; as our FMS does not honor altitudes in a climb. Later; when the pre departure clearance arrived it had cleared us to 14000 ft and I twisted that into the altitude alerter; forgetting about the 7000 ft. It was the first officer's leg and he was briefing the departure and I allowed myself to be distraction with some other paperwork; and did not pay attention that closely to what he was saying. During climb out passing through approximately 8500 ft; socal departure asked if we were aware of the crossing restr at pom. I said yes it is 7000 ft and noted we were at pom. The controller replied 'just checking.' all of this could have been avoided if: I had not allowed myself to get hurried when the pre departure clearance arrived and put in 14000 ft. Both the first officer and I discussed the crossing altitude in the brief. As captain it's my job to make sure all items are briefed and understood. Contributing factors: it was my second leg after being off for a month. Commercial charts are still not second in nature to me and their 8.5 X 11 inch size makes them difficult to use on a yoke clip. I'll avoid this problem in the future by slowing down in the preflight and being more involved in the brief.

Title: AN A300 FLT CREW CLIMBING OUT OF ONT ON THE POM7 SID FAIL TO CROSS POM AT 7000 OR BELOW.
Narrative: WHILE LOOKING OVER THE POM7 SID DURING PREFLT; I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A XING RESTR AT POM OF 7000 FT MAX. I TWISTED IN 7000 FT IN THE ALT ALERTER; AS OUR FMS DOES NOT HONOR ALTS IN A CLB. LATER; WHEN THE PDC ARRIVED IT HAD CLRED US TO 14000 FT AND I TWISTED THAT INTO THE ALT ALERTER; FORGETTING ABOUT THE 7000 FT. IT WAS THE FO'S LEG AND HE WAS BRIEFING THE DEP AND I ALLOWED MYSELF TO BE DISTR WITH SOME OTHER PAPERWORK; AND DID NOT PAY ATTN THAT CLOSELY TO WHAT HE WAS SAYING. DURING CLBOUT PASSING THROUGH APPROX 8500 FT; SOCAL DEP ASKED IF WE WERE AWARE OF THE XING RESTR AT POM. I SAID YES IT IS 7000 FT AND NOTED WE WERE AT POM. THE CTLR REPLIED 'JUST CHKING.' ALL OF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF: I HAD NOT ALLOWED MYSELF TO GET HURRIED WHEN THE PDC ARRIVED AND PUT IN 14000 FT. BOTH THE FO AND I DISCUSSED THE XING ALT IN THE BRIEF. AS CAPT IT'S MY JOB TO MAKE SURE ALL ITEMS ARE BRIEFED AND UNDERSTOOD. I'LL AVOID THIS PROB IN THE FUTURE BY SLOWING DOWN IN THE PREFLT AND BEING MORE INVOLVED IN THE BRIEF.
