Narrative:
Cleared for visual approach runway 9R in ZZZ; and was told to contact tower. We were 9 mi southwest of ZZZ level at 3000 ft MSL northbound for base leg. When I looked down; I heard the first officer yell and looked up to see us overtaking a cessna. We were not told of traffic; and our TCAS had no aircraft around us. There was no time for evasive maneuvers. We then told approach that we almost hit an aircraft. There was training going on at approach control at the time. We then landed uneventfully. WX was 10 SM and skc at ZZZ. We were told on the ground that the other aircraft called us in sight. I believe that we should have been notified of the traffic. I don't believe we were on the same frequency as the cessna.

Title: AN MD87 CREW REPORTS A NEAR MISS WITH A CESSNA APPROACHING AN ARPT WITH CONTROLLER TRAINING IN PROGRESS. OTHER ACFT DID NOT APPEAR ON THEIR TCAS.
Narrative: CLRED FOR VISUAL APCH RWY 9R IN ZZZ; AND WAS TOLD TO CONTACT TWR. WE WERE 9 MI SW OF ZZZ LEVEL AT 3000 FT MSL NBOUND FOR BASE LEG. WHEN I LOOKED DOWN; I HEARD THE FO YELL AND LOOKED UP TO SEE US OVERTAKING A CESSNA. WE WERE NOT TOLD OF TFC; AND OUR TCAS HAD NO ACFT AROUND US. THERE WAS NO TIME FOR EVASIVE MANEUVERS. WE THEN TOLD APCH THAT WE ALMOST HIT AN ACFT. THERE WAS TRAINING GOING ON AT APCH CTL AT THE TIME. WE THEN LANDED UNEVENTFULLY. WX WAS 10 SM AND SKC AT ZZZ. WE WERE TOLD ON THE GND THAT THE OTHER ACFT CALLED US IN SIGHT. I BELIEVE THAT WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE TFC. I DON'T BELIEVE WE WERE ON THE SAME FREQ AS THE CESSNA.
