Narrative:
Landing on runway 27. I haven't been to bos for about 15 yrs. The captain is also unfamiliar. We briefed the landing and the turn off selecting taxiway west or taxiway south as turn-off txwys. On touchdown and rollout we were asked if we could turn off at runway 4R. We declined. As we were slowing we then received a clearance to proceed to the end; turn off and hold short of taxiway B. No right or left direction was given. The controller meant for us to turn left at taxiway M. We proceeded straight ahead to the end which turned out to be an overrun area that also led to the end of runway 22R. Supplemental information from acn 738673: afterwards we were informed that we were not supposed to use the overrun area; and a succeeding aircraft had to go around. Tower apparently wanted us to turn left on taxiway M then hold short of taxiway B. I called a tower supervisor afterwards and he said a report would be filed; but probably an in-house report.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD80 FLT CREW INSTRUCTED BY TWR TO ROLL TO END OF RWY AND HOLD SHORT OF TXWY B WITHOUT BEING GIVING DIRECTION OF TURN. FLT CREW MISTAKENLY CONTINUED TO END OF OVERRUN AREA; MISSING INTENDED EXIT.
Narrative: LNDG ON RWY 27. I HAVEN'T BEEN TO BOS FOR ABOUT 15 YRS. THE CAPT IS ALSO UNFAMILIAR. WE BRIEFED THE LNDG AND THE TURN OFF SELECTING TXWY W OR TXWY S AS TURN-OFF TXWYS. ON TOUCHDOWN AND ROLLOUT WE WERE ASKED IF WE COULD TURN OFF AT RWY 4R. WE DECLINED. AS WE WERE SLOWING WE THEN RECEIVED A CLRNC TO PROCEED TO THE END; TURN OFF AND HOLD SHORT OF TXWY B. NO R OR L DIRECTION WAS GIVEN. THE CTLR MEANT FOR US TO TURN L AT TXWY M. WE PROCEEDED STRAIGHT AHEAD TO THE END WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE AN OVERRUN AREA THAT ALSO LED TO THE END OF RWY 22R. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 738673: AFTERWARDS WE WERE INFORMED THAT WE WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO USE THE OVERRUN AREA; AND A SUCCEEDING ACFT HAD TO GO AROUND. TWR APPARENTLY WANTED US TO TURN L ON TXWY M THEN HOLD SHORT OF TXWY B. I CALLED A TWR SUPVR AFTERWARDS AND HE SAID A RPT WOULD BE FILED; BUT PROBABLY AN IN-HOUSE RPT.
