Narrative:
Presentation of electronic chart information on aircraft display omitted the display of a '1' in '190' of the textual departure heading instructions. (Newark 7 departure; runway 22R.) after departure; ATC queried our actions and gave corrective instructions. It was later discovered that at other display zoom levels; the text was displayed correctly. The crew consulted only the text instructions and did not check them against the graphical representation on the chart. The crew briefed the SID and read the chart 3 times. A photograph was taken of the display error for evidence. The error was duplicated on other company aircraft. Gulfstream technical support was notified. Contact was made with new york TRACON after the flight and a photograph of the display error was e-mailed. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the captain advised that the error is in the display of the chart on the multi-function display in the efb mode. In the FMS mode there is no display of the two pertinent headings and; thus; the departure is flown in the heading select mode. He believes the dropped numeral only occurred on the third 'zoom in' from the default display mode. He reiterated the fault was reproducible in other company aircraft. Reporter commented the flight crew didn't review the graphic display because; as a 'heading' type of departure there was no 'route' to follow. Had they checked the graphic the error might have been caught.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GLF4 TURNS TO 090 DEGREES VICE REQUIRED 190 ON NEWARK SID FROM EWR. DISCOVER EFB DISPLAY OF THE TEXTUAL DESCRIPTION FAILS TO DISPLAY THE '1' ON CERTAIN ZOOM LEVELS.
Narrative: PRESENTATION OF ELECTRONIC CHART INFO ON ACFT DISPLAY OMITTED THE DISPLAY OF A '1' IN '190' OF THE TEXTUAL DEP HDG INSTRUCTIONS. (NEWARK 7 DEP; RWY 22R.) AFTER DEP; ATC QUERIED OUR ACTIONS AND GAVE CORRECTIVE INSTRUCTIONS. IT WAS LATER DISCOVERED THAT AT OTHER DISPLAY ZOOM LEVELS; THE TEXT WAS DISPLAYED CORRECTLY. THE CREW CONSULTED ONLY THE TEXT INSTRUCTIONS AND DID NOT CHK THEM AGAINST THE GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION ON THE CHART. THE CREW BRIEFED THE SID AND READ THE CHART 3 TIMES. A PHOTOGRAPH WAS TAKEN OF THE DISPLAY ERROR FOR EVIDENCE. THE ERROR WAS DUPLICATED ON OTHER COMPANY ACFT. GULFSTREAM TECHNICAL SUPPORT WAS NOTIFIED. CONTACT WAS MADE WITH NEW YORK TRACON AFTER THE FLT AND A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE DISPLAY ERROR WAS E-MAILED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE CAPTAIN ADVISED THAT THE ERROR IS IN THE DISPLAY OF THE CHART ON THE MULTI-FUNCTION DISPLAY IN THE EFB MODE. IN THE FMS MODE THERE IS NO DISPLAY OF THE TWO PERTINENT HEADINGS AND; THUS; THE DEP IS FLOWN IN THE HEADING SELECT MODE. HE BELIEVES THE DROPPED NUMERAL ONLY OCCURRED ON THE THIRD 'ZOOM IN' FROM THE DEFAULT DISPLAY MODE. HE REITERATED THE FAULT WAS REPRODUCIBLE IN OTHER COMPANY ACFT. REPORTER COMMENTED THE FLT CREW DIDN'T REVIEW THE GRAPHIC DISPLAY BECAUSE; AS A 'HDG' TYPE OF DEPARTURE THERE WAS NO 'ROUTE' TO FOLLOW. HAD THEY CHECKED THE GRAPHIC THE ERROR MIGHT HAVE BEEN CAUGHT.
