Narrative:

Engine failure. I was conducting initial IOE. Shortly after takeoff; during clean-up; after calling flaps 0; we heard and felt a loud bang. We determined that we had a left engine failure. I took control of aircraft; shortly thereafter; first officer declared an emergency with tower. After switching to departure control; we were put on a left downwind. We accomplished engine failure (no severe damage) checklist and associated immediate return checklist. During QRH procedures; flight attendant called and was told to stand by. When time permitted; we called flight attendants and answered questions (what's the problem; how long; etc). I chose not to brace passenger. The first officer made a brief announcement to passenger. We were cleared the visual and made an overweight landing (flaps 28 degrees; med autobrakes). We checked with emergency crew to see if there was any reason not to taxi to gate; there was none. We proceeded to gate and deplaned passenger.
