Narrative:
Controller issued direct fluky intersection. I heard this as pauki and repeated the clearance. The first officer read back fluky to the controller; but did not catch the discrepancy in the cockpit. The controller caught the error and cleared us direct. No conflict. It seems odd that there should be two intxns with such similar sounding names so close to one another.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD-80 CAPT CONFUSED TWO CLOSELY-LOCATED SIMILAR SOUNDING FIXES; FLUKY AND PAUKI; AND DEVIATED FROM HIS DIRECT TRACK.
Narrative: CTLR ISSUED DIRECT FLUKY INTXN. I HEARD THIS AS PAUKI AND REPEATED THE CLRNC. THE FO READ BACK FLUKY TO THE CTLR; BUT DID NOT CATCH THE DISCREPANCY IN THE COCKPIT. THE CTLR CAUGHT THE ERROR AND CLRED US DIRECT. NO CONFLICT. IT SEEMS ODD THAT THERE SHOULD BE TWO INTXNS WITH SUCH SIMILAR SOUNDING NAMES SO CLOSE TO ONE ANOTHER.
