Narrative:
Landed on runway 8 at lbb and received clearance to taxi to the ramp from runway 8 at taxiway right. Clearance was good for entire taxi; including runway 35L/17R. While approaching runway 35L on taxiway J; clearance was given to a distant aircraft to land on runway 35L. In order to be safe; I called tower to confirm authority/authorized to 'cross' runway 35L at taxiway J; while my actual intention was to use my previous clearance to taxi from taxiway J to taxiway F via runway 35L. Tower took my request to 'cross' runway 35L as literal; and when I arrived at taxiway F via runway 35L reminded me that clearance to cross a runway; means I can cross it; not go for a sunday drive on it. Factors: clearance from runway 8 at taxiway right to the ramp (near north end of taxiway east) allowed me my choice of rtes. By 'clarifying' with ground my clearance to 'cross' runway 35L; I did not accurately represent my intentions of runway 35L taxiway J to taxiway F. Runway 35L taxiway J to taxiway F seemed reasonable because previous construction had closed taxiway J; and I had only flown once since it had re-opened. I had flown for over a yr while it was under construction; however; and reverted to this mentality while taxiing. Since the airport was relatively quiet; this incident caused no safety issues. It did however make me realize the importance of 2 things: say what you mean; and do what you say while talking to tower/ground. Always re-familiarize yourself with the current open and closed txwys; even if it is your home airport. Construction can take a long time; but when the taxi diagram changes; as pilot you have to be on the same page as the tower.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLRED TO THE RAMP AFTER LNDG ON RWY 08 AT LBB; PA28 PLT TAXIS ON RWY 35/17 RATHER THAN SIMPLY CROSSING IT.
Narrative: LANDED ON RWY 8 AT LBB AND RECEIVED CLRNC TO TAXI TO THE RAMP FROM RWY 8 AT TXWY R. CLRNC WAS GOOD FOR ENTIRE TAXI; INCLUDING RWY 35L/17R. WHILE APCHING RWY 35L ON TXWY J; CLRNC WAS GIVEN TO A DISTANT ACFT TO LAND ON RWY 35L. IN ORDER TO BE SAFE; I CALLED TWR TO CONFIRM AUTH TO 'CROSS' RWY 35L AT TXWY J; WHILE MY ACTUAL INTENTION WAS TO USE MY PREVIOUS CLRNC TO TAXI FROM TXWY J TO TXWY F VIA RWY 35L. TWR TOOK MY REQUEST TO 'CROSS' RWY 35L AS LITERAL; AND WHEN I ARRIVED AT TXWY F VIA RWY 35L REMINDED ME THAT CLRNC TO CROSS A RWY; MEANS I CAN CROSS IT; NOT GO FOR A SUNDAY DRIVE ON IT. FACTORS: CLRNC FROM RWY 8 AT TXWY R TO THE RAMP (NEAR N END OF TXWY E) ALLOWED ME MY CHOICE OF RTES. BY 'CLARIFYING' WITH GND MY CLRNC TO 'CROSS' RWY 35L; I DID NOT ACCURATELY REPRESENT MY INTENTIONS OF RWY 35L TXWY J TO TXWY F. RWY 35L TXWY J TO TXWY F SEEMED REASONABLE BECAUSE PREVIOUS CONSTRUCTION HAD CLOSED TXWY J; AND I HAD ONLY FLOWN ONCE SINCE IT HAD RE-OPENED. I HAD FLOWN FOR OVER A YR WHILE IT WAS UNDER CONSTRUCTION; HOWEVER; AND REVERTED TO THIS MENTALITY WHILE TAXIING. SINCE THE ARPT WAS RELATIVELY QUIET; THIS INCIDENT CAUSED NO SAFETY ISSUES. IT DID HOWEVER MAKE ME REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF 2 THINGS: SAY WHAT YOU MEAN; AND DO WHAT YOU SAY WHILE TALKING TO TWR/GND. ALWAYS RE-FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE CURRENT OPEN AND CLOSED TXWYS; EVEN IF IT IS YOUR HOME ARPT. CONSTRUCTION CAN TAKE A LONG TIME; BUT WHEN THE TAXI DIAGRAM CHANGES; AS PLT YOU HAVE TO BE ON THE SAME PAGE AS THE TWR.
