Narrative:
After arriving at ZZZ the captain did the preflight exterior inspection and noticed that the nose strut appeared to be extended more than normal. Maintenance was notified and came out to inspect the strut. The mechanic came up to the flight deck and notified the captain and first officer that 'air had been let out of the strut; and that the strut extension now appeared normal.' a logbook entry had not been entered and the mechanic did not request a logbook entry for the inspection and/or servicing performed. The aircraft departed the gate on schedule followed by a normal taxi and takeoff. Upon selecting the landing gear lever up; the main gear retracted; but the nose failed to retract. The landing gear lever was selected to the down position and a normal 3 down and locked indication followed. A normal visual approach and landing was made followed by a normal taxi to the gate. Maintenance was notified and the aircraft was taken OTS. The crew and passenger switched to another aircraft and continued on uneventfully. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated the corrective action by maintenance for nose gear not retracting after takeoff was unknown. Their maintenance control took aircraft out of service. Both reporters also stated they have heard this aircraft had previous nlg problems; but could not confirm at this time. Ground shift (squat switch) is located on the nlg. With nose gear not up and locked; other systems were affected.

Title: AN MD83 ACFT NLG FAILED TO RETRACT AFTER TAKEOFF.
Narrative: AFTER ARRIVING AT ZZZ THE CAPT DID THE PREFLT EXTERIOR INSPECTION AND NOTICED THAT THE NOSE STRUT APPEARED TO BE EXTENDED MORE THAN NORMAL. MAINT WAS NOTIFIED AND CAME OUT TO INSPECT THE STRUT. THE MECH CAME UP TO THE FLT DECK AND NOTIFIED THE CAPT AND FO THAT 'AIR HAD BEEN LET OUT OF THE STRUT; AND THAT THE STRUT EXTENSION NOW APPEARED NORMAL.' A LOGBOOK ENTRY HAD NOT BEEN ENTERED AND THE MECH DID NOT REQUEST A LOGBOOK ENTRY FOR THE INSPECTION AND/OR SVCING PERFORMED. THE ACFT DEPARTED THE GATE ON SCHEDULE FOLLOWED BY A NORMAL TAXI AND TKOF. UPON SELECTING THE LNDG GEAR LEVER UP; THE MAIN GEAR RETRACTED; BUT THE NOSE FAILED TO RETRACT. THE LNDG GEAR LEVER WAS SELECTED TO THE DOWN POS AND A NORMAL 3 DOWN AND LOCKED INDICATION FOLLOWED. A NORMAL VISUAL APCH AND LNDG WAS MADE FOLLOWED BY A NORMAL TAXI TO THE GATE. MAINT WAS NOTIFIED AND THE ACFT WAS TAKEN OTS. THE CREW AND PAX SWITCHED TO ANOTHER ACFT AND CONTINUED ON UNEVENTFULLY. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THE CORRECTIVE ACTION BY MAINT FOR NOSE GEAR NOT RETRACTING AFTER TAKEOFF WAS UNKNOWN. THEIR MAINT CONTROL TOOK ACFT OUT OF SERVICE. BOTH REPORTERS ALSO STATED THEY HAVE HEARD THIS ACFT HAD PREVIOUS NLG PROBLEMS; BUT COULD NOT CONFIRM AT THIS TIME. GROUND SHIFT (SQUAT SWITCH) IS LOCATED ON THE NLG. WITH NOSE GEAR NOT UP AND LOCKED; OTHER SYSTEMS WERE AFFECTED.
