Narrative:
On climb out around 31000 ft; we received a 'left fuel strainer clogged' message. While pulling out the QRH; the left engine lost oil pressure and immediately failed. Complied with memory items; QRH procedure; and diverted to ZZZ. Once on ground; while talking to maintenance; we discovered left engine was on an FAA maintenance extension; allowing it to fly longer while maintenance monitors parameters. Let's stop saving money at the cost of safety. My airline has countless extensions; deferrals and waivers all to save money. Safety should not get a waiver! We were also dispatched with a deferred APU. So; late night; single engine; single generator. Thank god the WX was nice. Here's a suggestion; 'no extension on weak engines with other critical stuff deferred.'
