Narrative:
Pushback complete; brakes set. I just received the salute and release from guidance and said to the first officer; 'where is the tug?' it was still under the nose and totally out of my sight. So I have been given the salute and release to taxi and I would have hit the tug in a matter of seconds had I not asked where the tug was. The rampers clearly don't understand that the salute and release means we are cleared to taxi.
