Narrative:

On approach to ZZZ runway 17L saw a few birds gliding in a thermal column about 5 mi on the final approach path. Unable to take evasive maneuver; we hit at least 1 bird on nose aft of radome on the first officer's side. I counted at least 5 birds thermalling in the area though. Once hit; I knew damage was bad because of the change in sound of flight deck after impact. The first officer was PF and after impact could not see through windshield due to debris on windshield. I took the controls and declared an emergency and stated I wanted fire crews standing by. At this point we had no idea how bad the damage was and didn't know if wings; nose gear; or engine suffered any damage either. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that bird impacted forward and below first officer's windshield. When aircraft was inspected after landing; damage was restricted to this area. Avionics housed within that area were destroyed; and the affected panels sustained significant damage. The aircraft responded to flight control inputs normally.

Title: CL65 EXPERIENCED BIRD STRIKE ON FINAL APCH; DAMAGING ACFT NOSE AND OBSCURING FO'S WINDSHIELD.

Narrative: ON APCH TO ZZZ RWY 17L SAW A FEW BIRDS GLIDING IN A THERMAL COLUMN ABOUT 5 MI ON THE FINAL APCH PATH. UNABLE TO TAKE EVASIVE MANEUVER; WE HIT AT LEAST 1 BIRD ON NOSE AFT OF RADOME ON THE FO'S SIDE. I COUNTED AT LEAST 5 BIRDS THERMALLING IN THE AREA THOUGH. ONCE HIT; I KNEW DAMAGE WAS BAD BECAUSE OF THE CHANGE IN SOUND OF FLT DECK AFTER IMPACT. THE FO WAS PF AND AFTER IMPACT COULD NOT SEE THROUGH WINDSHIELD DUE TO DEBRIS ON WINDSHIELD. I TOOK THE CTLS AND DECLARED AN EMER AND STATED I WANTED FIRE CREWS STANDING BY. AT THIS POINT WE HAD NO IDEA HOW BAD THE DAMAGE WAS AND DIDN'T KNOW IF WINGS; NOSE GEAR; OR ENG SUFFERED ANY DAMAGE EITHER. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THAT BIRD IMPACTED FORWARD AND BELOW FO'S WINDSHIELD. WHEN ACFT WAS INSPECTED AFTER LNDG; DAMAGE WAS RESTRICTED TO THIS AREA. AVIONICS HOUSED WITHIN THAT AREA WERE DESTROYED; AND THE AFFECTED PANELS SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE. THE ACFT RESPONDED TO FLIGHT CONTROL INPUTS NORMALLY.
