Narrative:
Passing 10000 ft on climb out aircraft made a loud clanking noise followed by a left AC xtie; left generator and left AC bus failure. Bus would not reset and the #1 flight attendant reported light electrical burning smell with no smoke. We declared an emergency and returned for landing.

Title: MD80 FLT CREW REPORTS MAJOR ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION AT 10000 FEET DURING CLIMB OUT. AN EMERGENCY IS DECLARED AND THE FLIGHT RETURNS FOR A NORMAL LANDING.
Narrative: PASSING 10000 FT ON CLBOUT ACFT MADE A LOUD CLANKING NOISE FOLLOWED BY A L AC XTIE; L GENERATOR AND L AC BUS FAILURE. BUS WOULD NOT RESET AND THE #1 FLT ATTENDANT RPTED LIGHT ELECTRICAL BURNING SMELL WITH NO SMOKE. WE DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED FOR LNDG.
