Narrative:
After takeoff prior to frequency change; tower asked for a base/top report. I said no problem; and switched to departure. Initial altitude was 3000 ft on the climb out I logged bases at 2700 ft and at the same time had loud radio interference from electrical device. Still climbing; I turned to verify phones were off (on trip down; lead passenger left his on -- even after briefed to shut off). I asked everyone to check. Lead passenger still had his on. After it was shut off; interference was gone. However; at this time; both departure and myself noticed my altitude at 3500 ft. Departure asked me to verify -- I did. She said I was given 3000 ft; but to climb now to 4000 ft. I acknowledged initial altitude was 3000 ft and continued from 3500 ft to 4000 ft. I asked about conflict and was told there was none. P.south. I did give tower base and top report. Future briefs to state phones; etc; 'off' -- not in 'standby.' use of yoke notepad for altitudes; headings; frequency; all changes. Stabilize aircraft with autoplt; then address passenger of all pertinent information.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C414 OVERSHOT HIS CLBING ALT WHEN A PAX INTERPHONE SWITCH WAS LEFT ON CAUSING RADIO INTERFERENCE AND DISTRACTING HIS ATTENTION FROM FLYING.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF PRIOR TO FREQ CHANGE; TWR ASKED FOR A BASE/TOP RPT. I SAID NO PROB; AND SWITCHED TO DEP. INITIAL ALT WAS 3000 FT ON THE CLBOUT I LOGGED BASES AT 2700 FT AND AT THE SAME TIME HAD LOUD RADIO INTERFERENCE FROM ELECTRICAL DEVICE. STILL CLBING; I TURNED TO VERIFY PHONES WERE OFF (ON TRIP DOWN; LEAD PAX LEFT HIS ON -- EVEN AFTER BRIEFED TO SHUT OFF). I ASKED EVERYONE TO CHK. LEAD PAX STILL HAD HIS ON. AFTER IT WAS SHUT OFF; INTERFERENCE WAS GONE. HOWEVER; AT THIS TIME; BOTH DEP AND MYSELF NOTICED MY ALT AT 3500 FT. DEP ASKED ME TO VERIFY -- I DID. SHE SAID I WAS GIVEN 3000 FT; BUT TO CLB NOW TO 4000 FT. I ACKNOWLEDGED INITIAL ALT WAS 3000 FT AND CONTINUED FROM 3500 FT TO 4000 FT. I ASKED ABOUT CONFLICT AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NONE. P.S. I DID GIVE TWR BASE AND TOP RPT. FUTURE BRIEFS TO STATE PHONES; ETC; 'OFF' -- NOT IN 'STANDBY.' USE OF YOKE NOTEPAD FOR ALTS; HDGS; FREQ; ALL CHANGES. STABILIZE ACFT WITH AUTOPLT; THEN ADDRESS PAX OF ALL PERTINENT INFO.
