Narrative:
Immediately after touching down aircraft veered uncontrollably to the right and ground looped; coming to rest in a 4 ft deep drainage ditch located parallel to and approximately 30 ft from the paved runway surface. There were no personal injuries. Aircraft sustained damage to left and right landing gear; 1 propeller blade and underbody. Mechanic examined aircraft after retrieval and disassembly; and suspects one of the brakes malfunctioned. The location of the full-length drainage ditches so close to the runway on both the east and west sides creates the likelihood of similar incidents.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN AERONCA 7AC GROUND LOOPED AFTER LANDING; COMING TO REST IN A DITCH WITH DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT.
Narrative: IMMEDIATELY AFTER TOUCHING DOWN ACFT VEERED UNCONTROLLABLY TO THE R AND GND LOOPED; COMING TO REST IN A 4 FT DEEP DRAINAGE DITCH LOCATED PARALLEL TO AND APPROX 30 FT FROM THE PAVED RWY SURFACE. THERE WERE NO PERSONAL INJURIES. ACFT SUSTAINED DAMAGE TO L AND R LNDG GEAR; 1 PROP BLADE AND UNDERBODY. MECH EXAMINED ACFT AFTER RETRIEVAL AND DISASSEMBLY; AND SUSPECTS ONE OF THE BRAKES MALFUNCTIONED. THE LOCATION OF THE FULL-LENGTH DRAINAGE DITCHES SO CLOSE TO THE RWY ON BOTH THE E AND W SIDES CREATES THE LIKELIHOOD OF SIMILAR INCIDENTS.
