Narrative:
We were at FL370 and asked by ATC if we could make FL390; we could not but could make FL380. ATC cleared us to FL380. We climbed to FL380 with autothrottles and autoplt on. Shortly after leveloff heard a loud popping noise and felt a yawing movement like wake turbulence. I quickly looked at the engine instruments and saw engine gauges going to idle and then quickly coming back up to full power. Looking at the ECAM screen I saw engine #1 stall come on for 1-2 seconds and then disappear. All engine parameters returned to normal in just a few seconds. Flight attendants called to tell they felt and heard a loud bang in the back. Captain explained what had happened with the compressor stall. Captain sent messages to maintenance and dispatch to let them know what had happened and then talked to both a few mins later. We also went to the flight manual for compressor stall; most did not apply since the stalls ceased and did not come back. We did turn on the engine and wing anti-ice for the descent. After talking to maintenance and discussing the history of compressor stalls with this aircraft the captain sent another message asking if we should divert to ZZZ1 since this was going to ground the plane. We were told to continue on to ZZZ3. We continued with no other problems. I had flown this same aircraft day before and when descending from FL380 at a 1000 FPM we had the same compressor stall audible popping noise and yaw and ECAM engine #1 stall. We wrote up the aircraft and the plane was taken OTS. In ZZZ3 the captain talked to maintenance and was told that maintenance was recommending an engineering crew to ferry the aircraft some place and have the engine changed. In the meantime a maintenance crew was being sent to see if they could find anything else wrong that they might be able to fix. Captain and I discussed the situation and agreed that we would refuse the aircraft based on maintenance's recommendation of an engine change. We notified maintenance and the crew desk of this decision. Crew desk would not allow us to deadhead home that night (last leg of a 2 day trip). Captain discussed this with flight duty manager and the crew desk supervisor. This to no avail. Spent the night in ZZZ increasing the cumulative stress and fatigue we continue to feel.

WE WERE TOLD TO CONTINUE ON TO ZZZ3. WE CONTINUED WITH NO OTHER PROBS. I HAD FLOWN THIS SAME ACFT DAY BEFORE AND WHEN DSNDING FROM FL380 AT A 1000 FPM WE HAD THE SAME COMPRESSOR STALL AUDIBLE POPPING NOISE AND YAW AND ECAM ENG #1 STALL. WE WROTE UP THE ACFT AND THE PLANE WAS TAKEN OTS. IN ZZZ3 THE CAPT TALKED TO MAINT AND WAS TOLD THAT MAINT WAS RECOMMENDING AN ENGINEERING CREW TO FERRY THE ACFT SOME PLACE AND HAVE THE ENG CHANGED. IN THE MEANTIME A MAINT CREW WAS BEING SENT TO SEE IF THEY COULD FIND ANYTHING ELSE WRONG THAT THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO FIX. CAPT AND I DISCUSSED THE SITUATION AND AGREED THAT WE WOULD REFUSE THE ACFT BASED ON MAINT'S RECOMMENDATION OF AN ENG CHANGE. WE NOTIFIED MAINT AND THE CREW DESK OF THIS DECISION. CREW DESK WOULD NOT ALLOW US TO DEADHEAD HOME THAT NIGHT (LAST LEG OF A 2 DAY TRIP). CAPT DISCUSSED THIS WITH FLT DUTY MGR AND THE CREW DESK SUPVR. THIS TO NO AVAIL. SPENT THE NIGHT IN ZZZ INCREASING THE CUMULATIVE STRESS AND FATIGUE WE CONTINUE TO FEEL.
