Narrative:
Aircraft in LNAV. We were given new runway assign. Captain put runway 17 in FMC. Caused STAR to drop out. Aircraft continued straight ahead but continued to show LNAV engaged with no msgs on FMC. Once we realized we were not going direct to the VOR the captain fessed up to ATC. They said 'ya I've been watching you now for a while just turn to 320 degrees heading' (about 10 degree from current heading). No further incidents on the approach.
