Narrative:
Upon downwind (left traffic) I was advised to continue pattern and follow traffic. The traffic was on right base for runway 22L. I was on left traffic for runway 22L as well. I thought that the traffic was doing right traffic for runway 22R. Upon turning base and final; there was marginal separation between me and the traffic in the front. I was not advised to go around on final. I thought that the separation was sufficient and that the traffic would takeoff before I crossed the runway threshold. I did not go around or deviate because I was not advised to do so and also; I had the impression that a 'go around' would be unsafe due to the traffic in the pattern on downwind or flying over top of the traffic that landed in front of me; whose intentions seemed unclr to me. Traffic in the front had called for touch and goes but seemed to have been trying to stop on the runway prior to taking off again. I stopped the aircraft within approximately 300 ft off the aircraft in the front. I was unaware that the traffic; while we were still flying; was the traffic I was supposed to follow. I was already 45 degrees from the runway on downwind while the traffic made a right turn for final.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PRIVATE PLT OF SMA; CONFUSED AS TO WHICH PARALLEL RWY PRECEDING TRAFFIC WAS CLRED; LANDS ON THE SAME RWY WHILE STILL OCCUPIED BY THE ACFT.
Narrative: UPON DOWNWIND (L TFC) I WAS ADVISED TO CONTINUE PATTERN AND FOLLOW TFC. THE TFC WAS ON R BASE FOR RWY 22L. I WAS ON L TFC FOR RWY 22L AS WELL. I THOUGHT THAT THE TFC WAS DOING R TFC FOR RWY 22R. UPON TURNING BASE AND FINAL; THERE WAS MARGINAL SEPARATION BTWN ME AND THE TFC IN THE FRONT. I WAS NOT ADVISED TO GO AROUND ON FINAL. I THOUGHT THAT THE SEPARATION WAS SUFFICIENT AND THAT THE TFC WOULD TKOF BEFORE I CROSSED THE RWY THRESHOLD. I DID NOT GO AROUND OR DEVIATE BECAUSE I WAS NOT ADVISED TO DO SO AND ALSO; I HAD THE IMPRESSION THAT A 'GAR' WOULD BE UNSAFE DUE TO THE TFC IN THE PATTERN ON DOWNWIND OR FLYING OVER TOP OF THE TFC THAT LANDED IN FRONT OF ME; WHOSE INTENTIONS SEEMED UNCLR TO ME. TFC IN THE FRONT HAD CALLED FOR TOUCH AND GOES BUT SEEMED TO HAVE BEEN TRYING TO STOP ON THE RWY PRIOR TO TAKING OFF AGAIN. I STOPPED THE ACFT WITHIN APPROX 300 FT OFF THE ACFT IN THE FRONT. I WAS UNAWARE THAT THE TFC; WHILE WE WERE STILL FLYING; WAS THE TFC I WAS SUPPOSED TO FOLLOW. I WAS ALREADY 45 DEGS FROM THE RWY ON DOWNWIND WHILE THE TFC MADE A R TURN FOR FINAL.
