Narrative:
Inbound to lax via civet 5 for runway 25L (expected). Late handoff to socal (busy). They changed us to descend via civet 5 for runway 24R. Updated FMC (preloaded in route 2). Using autoplt for descent. After change to runway 24R executed; aircraft automation was not keeping up; so I manually intervened to get back on profile (VNAV/LNAV still engaged). In trying to get the aircraft caught up; and retuning ILS; rebriefing; and resetting; we inadvertently descended to approximately 9000 ft prior to skoll (10000A) caught error and climbed; crossing skoll at about 9850 ft. Were told to descend to 7000 ft for runway 25L (runway change). Again updated only ILS; left FMC's alone for the moment. Flew manually. Landing was uneventful. Attention to navigation is the priority; while monitoring automation. Automation may have let us down on VNAV/LNAV; but we should have caught it quicker.

IN TRYING TO GET THE ACFT CAUGHT UP; AND RETUNING ILS; REBRIEFING; AND RESETTING; WE INADVERTENTLY DSNDED TO APPROX 9000 FT PRIOR TO SKOLL (10000A) CAUGHT ERROR AND CLBED; XING SKOLL AT ABOUT 9850 FT. WERE TOLD TO DSND TO 7000 FT FOR RWY 25L (RWY CHANGE). AGAIN UPDATED ONLY ILS; LEFT FMC'S ALONE FOR THE MOMENT. FLEW MANUALLY. LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL. ATTN TO NAV IS THE PRIORITY; WHILE MONITORING AUTOMATION. AUTOMATION MAY HAVE LET US DOWN ON VNAV/LNAV; BUT WE SHOULD HAVE CAUGHT IT QUICKER.
