Narrative:
Immediately after takeoff; 'smoke toilet' warning message displayed. We continued with the SID and normal procedures (retracting flaps etc). Then we ran the QRH and notified ATC (period of 1-2 mins). In addition to complying with the QRH procedures; we asked the flight attendant to investigate. She reported no fire or visible smoke; but a strange odor of smoke and activation of the audible lavatory smoke alarm. In compliance with the QRH; we asked for ATC clearance to return and land at ZZZ. We declared an emergency. Passenger were briefed by the flight attendant. During our return to the airport; the caution message extinguished. We landed without incident.
